If you follow The Cure, then there's little doubt that you know who Roger O'Donnell [ex-The Cure, Thompson Twins, Psychedelic Furs, Berlin] is. Since leaving the band, O'Donnell has recorded a full record using only the Moog Voyager called The Truth In Me. Everything I've head so far from it is quite pleasant. Give a listen.

Mahogany :: Supervitesse! video

Last night I saw Mahogany at Dave P's greatNight Time party. They were amazing! I wish I had photos to show, but this time Mahogany was an 8-piece band (2 drummers, 3 guitarists, 2 bassists and a vocalist), and was quite the spectacle.

Their new Connectivity LP seems to be coming out soon, but neither their label nor the band's official site seem to want to give us any exact details. Word on the street is that it was partially produced by ex-Cocteau Twin, Robin Guthrie.

First off, I'd like to state that I HATE Neutral Milk Hotel. Secondly, I'd like to note that I find it fairly annoying that Beirut is compared to them so often.

To give you the short story, Beiruit is a 19-year old kid named Zach Condon, who has recorded a record that nicely falls in with Magnetic Fields and Jens Lekman, but backed by an orchestra of eastern european folk instruments.

If you haven't heard of him yet, prepare yourself. Beat everyone to the punch and pick it up from Ba Da Bing! for $10 ppd!

Few of you probably remember Rollerskate Skinny. Probably even fewer remember Aspera. It's a shame on both counts. I don't feel I'm wrong in saying that both groups were criminally overlooked, but digging back and listening to both (as I did today), I'll also be the first to admit that it's painfully obvious why neither bands really caught on. It's weird shit.

Both bands ran a parallel course, taking great pop songs and orchestrating them into great catastrophic jumbles. The vocals for both fall somewhere between Ian McCulloch, Julian Cope, and Peter Murphy in a strange sort of way, and are surrounded by anything from noise to toy pianos, depending on the song.

To make a long story short, both bands broke up, and members of each somehow found each other in NYC, becoming Favourite Sons. I've seen them a few times, and they're one of the best bands in the city, in my humble opinion. They've traded in a good deal of the strange qualities of their older bands, and are now just a great somewhat straightforward rock band. Apparently, there's a 7-inch on GSL which I can't find, as well as a UK-only EP on Loog that I'm about to hunt down on import.

The've just signed to VICE, so I'm sure you'll be seeing them all over the place, real soon!

This is what I know about Portland's Eux Autres:

1. They're a brother/sister duo that doesn't make me cringe at the thought of brother/sister duos.
2. Janet Weiss [Sleater-Kinney/Quasi] recorded their CD.
3. NY-based animator Scott Bateman did a short clip for one of their songs here as part of his self-made challenge to create one animated short a day for a year.
4. Eux Autres is French for "The Others". It's a mouthful of a name.
5. They're originally from Omaha, NE.
6. That's Smolli the beagle pictured with them above.
7. Eux Autres is damn good.

Au Revoir Simone are nice girls who play nice music. Kind of Broadcast/Stereolab-ish, but with more of a pop goal that has almost twee results at points. Lot's of "la"s and "ooh"s... That's a good thing!

I ran into Annie from the band and her fiance' on the streets of Austin and then once again, at the airport on the way back from SXSW and, well... everything that I can muster up to say about these ladies is nice and pleasant. Good people, good tunes. Check 'em out for yourself..

The Stills :: Without Feathers

If the names William Seidel and Ryan Webber don't ring a bell, I'm pretty sure they will soon. These partners in musical crime have been working together forever, in midwest bands such as Camden, The Promise Ring [they were touring members], and currently Decibully and New Sense. Decibully is a 7-piece band that's a bit hard to pin down. In them, I hear The Pogues, indie/alt-country, and Radiohead experimentation [in a GOOD way] with a frustrated working class/middle-america slant. They're Polyvinyl's biggest mistake, in that the label have never really seemed to put the energy behind Decibully that have made some of their labelmates better known. New Sense, on the other hand, make me think of Phoenix and Everything But The Girl at times. They've offered a few low-key releases on Chicago label, Brilliante and are playing a much of NY shows next week before a couple of midwest shows with Voxtrot and Tapes 'N Tapes.

Today, I had SXSW on my mind. One of the best things about the last two years of SXSW, was that one of my favorite bands, Trashcan Sinatras played loads of shows at each. I have my fingers crossed that this will make it three years in a row. When I had first heard them in 1990, I thought they sounded like The Smiths, and to be fair, their first album, Cake, did have a slight tinge of Morrissey and Marr to it. This wasn't a bad thing. In fact, it's the main reason I paid attention to them. The same thing can be said for Gene and Voxtrot. Surprisingly enough, all three of these bands soldiered on and became each their own amazingly unique and individual selves.

PolloxNiner's Ulrich Schnauss post made me shudder with three words - "drum and bass". At first, I lost a little respect for Schnauss, but once I collected myself I was quickly reminded that the past is the past, and that sometimes, such things are forgivable.

In 1994, I recieved a package that had two albums in it. One was Seefeel's Quique, the other was Bark Psychosis' Hex. I immediately immersed myself in both. Seefeel, I understood right away. It was all new for me, but it clicked. The washey loops, pattering electronics, the structure, it was all foreign, but it all made sense. Bark Psychosis, on the other hand was atmospheric, yet minimal, and no matter how many times I listened to it, I wasn't able to place where it should be filed. And I kept on coming back to it. Four years later, I discovered Talk Talk's Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock and Bark Psychosis makes a whole lot more sense to me. They've even shared members at times.

As it is with a few great records, I believe that Hex is something that should be heard rather than chalked up to a few words.

So, what does this have to do with Ulrich Schnauss? Yes, it's a roundabout babble, but Graham Sutton disbanded Bark Psychosis for years after Hex to concentrate on his drum 'n bass project, Boymerang. Although I felt somewhat stabbed in the back upon learning this, it was all made up for with a return to Bark Psychosis with 2004's Codename: Dustsucker.

When you think of Nebraska, Saddle Creek, Bright Eyes, The Faint, Cursive and the rest of the bunch come to mind, right? Well, if you dig a little deeper into the past, you'll find For Against, Lincoln's unsung heroes.

Since the late '80s, Jeffery Runnings has led For Against through a handful of lineups, skillfully combining the atmosphere of the 4AD label and the stripped down minimalism of Factory post-punk with a nod to the coldwave era. Minneapolis' Words On Music label have thankfully reissued their classic Echelons (1987), and December (1988) LPs in the last few years as well as their latest record, Coalesced (2002). If you like what you hear, I'd highly suggest hunting down their 1990 IPR 10-inch, In The Marshes (pictured), which is a bit darker and experimental with drum machines, and is by far my favorite For Against release.

Somehow, I have a feeling that even Lincoln doesn't know what they have on their hands. Anyhow, here's the motherload. Enjoy.

Somewhere along the line, Los Angeles' Languis morphed from a pleasant IDM/organic recording project duo to a mindblowing full-on modernized shoegaze band. Their Other Desert Cities EP was produced by Ian Catt (Trembling Blue Stars, Saint Etienne). If the rest of it is as good as the MP3 below, I'll gladly bow down and lick your boots clean.

You Ain't No Picasso posted this yesterday, but it deserves to be passed on. Chris Richards of Washington DC's Q And Not U hasn't wasted any time since his former band parted ways this summer.

He has a new full-length out on Academy Fight Song under his Ris Paul Ric moniker, which was recorded with Tim Hecker (Alien8). The songs that I've heard sound like the quieter moments on Q And Not U's Different Damage.

American Analog Set • Add 3rd NY show

Those who waited too long to buy tickets for American Analog Set's sold-out Southpaw and Mercury Lounge shows should be excited. The band has added a 3rd NY show at Mercury Lounge on Sunday, November 20th.

Rumour has it that Favourite Sons, (Ken Griffin from Rollerskate Skinny and most of Aspera) will be the opener on this one. You may remember them playing with AmAnSet's Andrew Kenny (solo) and the wonderful Mahogany earlier in the year at Rothko. Keep your fingers crossed.
